GETTING THERE
BY CAR – In spite of its decentralised position (the city is only about 100km/62mi from the French border) there is a good network of motorways linking Turin to various cities. Furthermore, thanks to its famous octagonal plan and wide 19C avenues, traffic, although heavy at times, is manageable and it is easier to travel in and around Turin by car than it is in many other Italian cities.
BY BUS – The intercity bus terminal is at Corso Vittorio Emanuele 131H (intersection with Corso Ferrucci) t011 43 38 100, www.autostazionetorino.it.
BY TRAIN – For train info: t06 68 47 54 75. The main railway stations in the city are:
Porta Nuova, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 53.
Porta Susa, Piazza XVIII Dicembre 8.
BY AIR – Turin’s international airport is situated 11km/6.8mi north of the city in Caselle. It is served by national and international airline companies (www.aeroportoditorino.it).
Buses operated by Sadem ensure regular connections between the airport and the city, taking 45min, from 6.10am to midnight (depart from the airport, arrivals floor) and from the city from 5.15am to 11pm (depart from Porta Nuova – Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 57a – and Porta Susa – Corso San Martino). Tickets can be purchased at the airport from the tourist office and automatic ticket machine on the arrivals floor and, when leaving from the city, from the bars close to the bus stop. For a small surcharge they can also be bought on board.
TORINO + PIEMONTE CARD
The card includes free transport for 2, 3, 5 or 7 days on all public transport in the city as well as free entrance to over 180 museums and other sites and discounts for car hire, sports equipment hire, guided tours and concerts and various other events.
The card costs 22/27/33/37€, for information contact Turismo Torino, t011 53 51 81, www.turismotorino.org.
GETTING AROUND
The best way of discovering the city is by walking. The historic centre is compact and can be covered on foot; pedestrians are protected from inclement weather by the arcades lining the main streets.
BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT – GTT (City transport company) is based at Corso Bramante 66a, t800 01 91 52 (freephone) or 011 57 64 563, www.5t.torino.it. Tickets can be purchased at tobacconists, newspaper stands and authorised bars. There are various types of tickets: the biglietto ordinario urbano (1.50€) is valid for 90mins, a biglietto giornaliero (5€) allows unlimited travel all day, or for two (7.50€) or three days (10€); the shopping ticket (3€) is valid for four hours from when it is stamped, from 9am–8pm.
BY TAXI – Pronto Taxi: t011 57 37. Radio Taxi: t011 57 30 or 011 33 99.
